The Foundational Principles of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for psychosis (CBTp) e-course offers trainees a self-paced, virtual environment that incorporates both didactics and reflection activities in support of a foundational understanding of both Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and psychosis. Asynchronous online training is appropriate for clinical professionals and allied partners looking to increase their understanding of psychosis and psychosis care. No previous therapy or CBT experience is required.
Upon completion of the e-course, trainees will be able to:
- recognize the features, symptoms, and functional impact of psychotic disorders;
- identify the foundational elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy;
- identify the perspectives and attitudes attributed to a CBTp-informed, recovery-based mindset;
- and recognize CBTp-informed skills that can increase confidence and effectiveness when supporting individuals experiencing psychosis.
Module-specific learning objectives are detailed below.
Module 1: A Brief Overview of Psychosis
- identify psychosis as a dynamic state which can vary in severity and frequency
- identify psychosis as common and treatable
- recognize the symptoms of psychosis
- recognize the correct incidences of psychosis recovery
Module 2: Adopting a CBTp Mindset
- recognize common vulnerabilities and common stressors
- identify approaches that reduce stigma and increase rapport when working with psychosis
Module 3: Psychosis & Distress
- identify the three most common unhelpful thinking styles associated with psychosis
- identify components of the cognitive triangle that work to maintain or increase distress
Module 4: Psychosis & Functional Impairment
- define functional impairment
- recognize key factors that contribute to the development of functional impairment
Module 5: Understanding Hallucinations
- identify the 5 types of hallucinations
- recognize the primary focus when discussing hallucinations with a client
Module 6: Understanding Delusions
- recognize common myths related to the treatment of delusions
- identify examples of confrontation, collusion, and riding the collaborative fence
Module 7: Understanding Negative Symptoms
- recognize the negative symptoms associated with schizophrenia
- recognize a primary focus when working with individuals experiencing negative symptoms
